For a less expensive option (if I remember about half the price) there is a guy in Council Bluffs that used to own a shop but now just does private lessons. He works very well around your schedule and will provide all the equipment for the confined water assessments at the YMCA in CB. If weather works he will take you some place close in Iowa for the open water skills tests (again providing equipment) as well but for us we ran out of time for that.

If you'd like the information I'd have to get it. Please email me at janelle.bitz@marriott.com (please direct from your email rather then the meetup since it's blocked at work).

I can't believe I didn't see this post before. My husband and I are avid scuba divers (it's tapered off a bit since I had my son almost two years ago) but I'm picking it back up this year.

More importantly, my husband is an assistant instructor and does some instruction courses through DiVentures. I bet if we got a group of people that were interested in getting certified he could work out a great price and even be one of the instructors for the group!

I will try and get some info from him and post it.

We would also be interested in future scuba events with NAG.

Lindsay, that's great! My wife and I would love to get together with you and your husband to perhaps work something out that would benefit the group. There is a lot of interest, honestly more than I thought there would be wh when I posted this idea which is wonderful. Anything we can do to get those interested in SCUBA and going on dive trips would be awesome. I look forward to seeing what you can come up withand hearing more of your ideas if you could indeed help out. we would like to take a trip this spring or summer.

Is anyone still interested in this? Are there any places closer then the ocean worth diving? For a quick refresher trip that is not expensive. Maybe the great lakes but it's rather cold there. I have heard large lakes (like the Lake of the Woods but again way too cold) actually have a lot of interesting things to see. It's no tropical fish, 80+ degree water but a way to refresh your skills and still see some of the underwater world. Plus I'd rather see less in a Lake (one with clean, clear water, and a depth greater then ones in the immediate area) then the cement wall in a pool to keep me up to date on my skills.

I am interested but can't do any dive trips till Sept.

Heartland Scuba in Lincoln has a small pool and also does the intro dives for $15-20pp, and if you are certified you just pay for the air fill.

They have a web site and also there is a list of group dive trips. I'm assuming Diventures has the same.

I have not dove a lot so a refresher would be good. A few years ago (4-5) went on 4 dives in the Carribbean. Didn't see many fish but it was fun anyhow. A guy invited me to do some night diving but I had to attend another function so couldn't go night diving, darn.

Before that was like 1994 or so in a sandpit out west of kearney. The sandpit wasn't bad, good viz. Hey, it is close.

We did the open water check out dive in a sandpit near the platte river. I think it was between Linc and Omaha, Carol Joy Holling or something. The viz was great. Not sure if they dive there anymore but there has to be other close places.

I am interested in doing a trip to Key Largo in April. It is the end of ski season and it is still off season in the Keys, which makes the rates a lot better. I know it is a good distance away but I could fly or drive my Prius, which would carry 4 of us in relative, inexpensive comfort. We could make it in two days.

Anyway, anyone interested?

Bill - I would definitely be interested. I have family and friends in South Florida driving me crazy to come and visit, and I probably can't take vacation time again until April anyway. I'm a snorkeler, not a scuba diver, but the dive boats usually mix both.

We'd have a place to stay in Pembroke Pines if we needed it. Key Largo is about 90 minutes drive from my brother's place, and there are also some campsites in and around John Pennekamp Park. Another option would be to split the cost of renting a house down there - though they are usually week long rentals. Flights to Ft Lauderdale usually run about $250-$300 in April - not too bad - and a much easier airport to deal with than Miami. Key West is about 2 1/2 hours further south from Key Largo - but the snorkeling is best around Key Largo.

Count me interested!

Deb, That is absolutely perfect. I may drive down early and do my recertification there. We could use a camp ground and find a site that allows my camper and tents on one site. Then every one that goes will be able to use the camper for preparing food and the restroom.
